The Gambia is a former British colony located on the west coast of Africa, only 6 hours flight from London. I lived in Gambia on and off for over six years (running cultural” school of music / a>) and I rate the Gambia as one of the best holiday destinations in the world. P> The Gambia is a colorful country and is known as “the smiling side by those who know. The music is wonderfully rich and almost everywhere you go, you can hear the African drums premises, the a>, playing in the distance . For many years, however, it has been delayed by a recurring problem, that of “bumsters. Bumsters are the local people (mainly young men) who feed on the ignorance and simplicity of tourists to extort money from them and it is often driven by the need to obtain drugs or alcohol. I have traveled to many countries around the world but I’ve never seen so many tourists and harassed so intensely as I have seen in the Gambia. It is a problem that has its roots buried in the social structure of the country and it is a problem that will not be easy to remove. P> This said, however, it is still a great place to travel to and following tips should make the average tourist to resist the way the bumster. P> You are particularly vulnerable to scams in the first days of your stay, if your skin is not tanned and local bumsters know you’re new to the country. As you develop a tan and an attitude of confidence and the air, you’ll have less worries of small traders, but you’re still very vulnerable to scams and frauds practiced expensive.
